On Monday 14th May the Annual Parish Meeting was held
at the village hall. Three parish councillors and 9 members of the public
were present.
Reports
were presented by Cty Cllr Phillip Morris-Jones of Warwickshire County Council
and by Cllr A. Gillias of Rugby Borough Council. A report from the Village
Trust was given by treasurer Anthony Grimshaw, who reported a successful
year both socially and financially. Issues raised by the public included the
poor
condition of the road surface in Brookside Avenue.
The meeting was followed by the AGM of the parish council. Apologies were received from Cllrs Mark Barnett and Stuart Lenton. The appointment of officers then too place, Cllrs A. Gillias re-elected as chairman and Cllr Damon Swindell was appointed as vice-chairman.
Rugby District Inspector Rob Gainer gave a short talk on the new arrangements for policing the rural areas. As details were still being finalised Inspector Gainer told the meeting that he would be able to give more information at a later date.
The meeting was informed that Mr. P. Cowley, of W.C.C, had confirmed
that road surface repairs would be carried out in the near future.
The meeting heard that two applications had been made to the Rural Development
Fund of R. B. C. for a streetlight in the centre of the village and bollards
to protect the war memorial triangle.
The subject of grass cutting was again raised. It was noted that the overall appearance of the playing field was greatly improved by regular mowing by the contractor and by Cllr. A. Gillias who has cut the grass on several occasions this season.
Mr. J. Cunliffe reported that the Parish Plan was nearing completion. There had been a very good response to the housing survey recently distributed throughout the village, this is now being assessed.
On Sunday 20th May the Revel group of parishes held a combined service at
Churchover conducted by the Rector , the Reverend Christine Garrod, assisted
by the Reverend Beth Smith and reader George Lee.
The congregation consisted of worshippers from Pailton and the sister churches
from throughout the large Revel area. The address was give by Beth Smith who
likened the component parts of our outlying parishes to parts of a great jigsaw
which fitted together to form a large rural picture. The main service concluded
with refreshments which were followed by a service of Holy Communion.
On Sunday 20th May Pailton Branch of Rugby Conservative Association staged
a drinks party generously hosted by Mr Gerry Baxter and his wife Pam at Stretton
under Fosse Manor House.
The Branch chairman, the Earl of Denbigh, was present also the prospective
Conservative candidate for the Rugby constituency, Mark Pawsey, accompanied
by his wife Tracey. The chairman and Mark Pawsey both addressed the gathering
on a variety of current topics and answered questions from branch members.
The bar was organised by Mr. Paul Davey and the raffle by Joanna Morris-Jones.
Much gratitude was expressed to the ladies who had prepared an enticing selection
of savouries.
On the afternoon of this busy Sunday many villagers visited the open garden
event staged at the Manor House by Stuart and Jane Le Cornu and their family.
Visitors were greeted at the gate with a glass of fruit punch to enjoy as they
walked around the five acres of beautifully tended gardens.The carefully manicured
lawns, two friendly ducks, the vibrant bushes and flowers to the natural wildness
of the pond and luxury of their own tennis court, all was a delight to the
eye. A restful cup of tea and slice of homemade cake completed the pleasure.
A small plant stall and a raffle helped to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research
which is to benefit from this lovely afternoon enjoyed by over 40 visitors.
