Parish Council Meeting 5-12-2005

On Monday 5th December Pailton Parish Council held its monthly meeting at the village hall with 4 councillors present, the county councillor and 7 members of he public in attendance.

During the open part of the meeting it was reported that the Village Trust considered the floor of the village hall to be in need of replacement and that the cost would be in the region of £2000. The Trust also advised that an estimate in the region of £10,000 had been obtained for the replacement of some of the playing field equipment for which grant funding will be sought.

Residents of Lutterworth Road raised their concern about a planning application for the erection of a stable block at a site on the edge of the village and the chairman gave his assurance that their views would be considered when the application is discussed by the parish council.

When matters arising from the previous meeting were discussed Cllr A Gillias reported that he had held a meeting with the concerned resident about the chicanes at Coventry Road which was considered to be a danger to pedestrians. After discussion it was decided to review the traffic calming measures after they had been in place for 12 months. The 2 chicanes needed to be monitored for their record of accidents. Members will give careful thought to their monitoring procedure.

Cllr Mrs A Moss advised that she had received an undertaking from the footpaths officer that the parish footpaths will be inspected when the weather improves.

A circular from RBC has invited parish councils to state their priorities for local services which the council decided should be drainage, litter collection, road and pavement sweeping and refuse collection.

Planning applications were discussed including one for a garage at 1 Coventry Road, and another for a stable block at 68 Lutterworth Road also one or a drying plant at Pailton Pastures Farm and a request for an illuminated sign at Pailton Village Store.

Members agreed to revert to a previous planning procedure whereby applications would be placed by Cllr Mrs J. Gould at the village store for public scrutiny prior to being discussed at the next meeting of the parish council.

Cllrs A Gillias, M. Hodge and the clerk Mr R. Candelent are to attend a meeting with officers of the Warwick Association of Local Councils to discuss the parish council application for Quality Parish Council Status.

Cllr A Gillias informed the meeting that following a presentation at the recent meeting of the Fosse Divisional Panel an encouraging response had arisen in Monks Kirby for volunteers willing to assist with the foundation of a youth club which, it was hoped, might embrace Pailton village as well, possibly on an alternating basis.

County Cllr Phillip Morris-Jones informed the meeting that the home security scheme sponsored by the county council enabled residents over the age of 55 or those drawing benefits to obtain free advice on domestic security also financial assistance with implementing such measures. Details will be posted on the parish council notice board.

The next meeting will be held on 9 January 2006.

Passamezzo at St Edith's

*On Friday 9th December music lovers from the village made their way to St Edith’s church Monks Kirby to enjoy a delightful candlelit concert of Renaissance Music performed by a greatly talented group titled Passamezzo. The London based trio consisted of counter-tenor Peter Kenny and instrumentalists Alison Kinder and Tamsin Lewis.

The versatility of the visiting group, playing a wide array of contemporary instruments, provided a seasonal programme of period music to the very evident enjoyment of the large audience present.
The performers were attired in colourful Elizabethan costumes, reminiscent of a more elegant age, which blended in gentle harmony with the graceful surroundings of our mother church, itself ancient by centuries before the onset of the Renaissance.

A distinctive feature of the programme was the first public performance in 250 years of a piece entitled ‘beat up a drum for Christmas’ recently discovered in the archives of the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
The event was organised by the Friends of St Edith’s under the direction of church warden John Collier.

Carols and Christingle at St Denis'

On Sunday 11th December St Denis Church welcomed worshippers of all ages to its combined service of carols and Christingle.

Hand-delivered Christmas cards throughout the village announcing this seasonal event ensured one of the largest congregations in recent memory. A mixed-voiced choir had been assembled for the occasion by Patricia and Mark Barnett together with organist Patsy Howes which added considerable lustre to the carefully selected order of favourite carols.

The service was conducted by Mrs. Ruth Bilson and Mr Richard Latham with readings by members of the regular congregation.

Following the service generous portions of mulled wine and mince pies were consumed by the enlivened congregation who all declared that they had enjoyed and benefited from this exceptionally well organised service. Much credit was extended to the local musicians for their accomplished contribution to this memorable and successful occasion.
