Remembrance Service
Sunday 9th November marked the annual Service of
Remembrance held at Saint Denis church.
The church was filled to capacity with all those members of our
community who faithfully observe the traditional ceremony of Remembrance for
those who sacrificed their lives for our country.
The service was conducted by the Reverend
Beth Smith whose background as an army wife has enriched her understanding of
service life.
During her address she quoted the hallowed words of
the Great War poem “In Flanders Fields” while recounting the awesome
experiences of those engaged in that deadly conflict.
As the eleventh hour approached, the congregation filed out in a chilly
wind for the Act of Remembrance alongside the village war
memorial.
The standard of the Royal British Legion
was borne by Mr. Tom Malone representing Pailton Ex Servicemen’s
Club.
Wreaths were laid by County Councillor Phillip
Morris-Jones on behalf of the community, while the parish council wreath was
placed by a visiting ex soldier John Parker who had experienced recent active
service with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
The Roll of Honour of the 15 servicemen of
Pailton who gave their lives in the two world wars was read out by ex infantry
officer Mr. Dick Moss which was followed by the sounding of the Last Post, the
two minute silence then the Reveille.
It concluded with the emotive words of the
Kohima Epitaph which would have been echoed at similar gatherings throughout
the nation.
It was noted that the war memorial again provided
its customary repose for a floral tribute placed each year by a loving sister
in memory of her brother, W. Street who gave his life in the Second World
War.
