Pailton Pig Racing
On 29th November the foundations of the village hall
vibrated with shouts of exhilaration during the Pailton Village Trust’s last
event of the year.
‘Pailton Pig Racing’, became an evening filled with the light hearted
joys and sorrows of winning or losing depending on the chances of brightly
coloured pigs racing round a table track at frustratingly varied
speeds.
This intriguing variation on the popular racing event was devised by
Pailtonians Louise and Buddy Perriera of Rugby Road who made the very impressive
papier mache pigs which caused such delight among the participants. These pigs
were sold to owners who hoped that their brightly hued porkers would win them a
fortune. Betting, which was brisk, also the winning odds were controlled by a
specially devised computer program ably overseen by Louise, while Buddy tossed
the two dice that determined how far along the track each pig would
trot.
Each race was sponsored by a local enterprise who supplied the prize for
their event. At 8.30 precisely the racing was suspended at the arrival of a very
welcome fish and chip supper served in traditional style in cosy paper
wrappers.
The six heats caused noisy delight among the partakers but the greatest excitement
was kept for the grand finale involving the six heat winners. The winner
of this race was Mrs Perriera [Buddy's Mum!!!] who claimed the prize of a bottle of
champagne.
The tireless punters clamoured for an encore
race between the six new owners who had purchased the pigs at a lively auction. The triumphant winner, Mrs Ann
Moss, received her prize to loud applause..
In social terms the evening proved an outstanding success and provided
much needed funds for the continuing maintenance of the village hall. The
Trust’s chairholder, Lesley French thanked all involved including the sponsors,
the nearby fish and chip shop, the two very busy barmen, Mike and John Hudson
and most of all to Louise and Buddy Perriera for making the evening such a
memorable occasion

New Head Teacher of the Revel
Church of England Primary School
On the evening of Sunday 30th November worshippers from Pailton joined
other members of the Revel Parishes at St. Edith’s Church in Monks Kirby in a
service of welcome and commissioning of the new head teacher of the Revel Church
of England Primary School, Mrs Jill Tomlinson.
The well attended service was led by the Reverend Christine Garrod
assisted by the Reverend Beth Smith and Reader Mr George Lee. The address was
give by the Diocesan Director of Education, Mrs Linda Wainscot, assisted by the
pupils of the school.
The commissioning of the head teacher then took place in which it was
stressed that religious teaching was a very important part of a child’s
education and that the school should be rooted in Christian values, principles
and beliefs. The parents, governors, staff and pupils were asked to commit
themselves to helping the head teacher in her duty to the school.
The school children then joined the vicar and Mrs Tomlinson in the
Chancel to sing the school prayer.
This was followed by the dedication of four new altar cloths, made and
embroidered by Mrs Ruth Bilson who is a prominent member of the St Denis
congregation in Pailton. The cloths, in each of the four liturgical colours,
will be placed on the school alter table in the Revel School.
The service ended with a hymn and prayers. The congregation were then
able to talk to the school staff while enjoying refreshments provided by the
church committee members.
